Long Story Guesthouse

Plettenberg Bay is not the kind of place that needs to be rushed.

Yes, there are beaches to walk, views to find, restaurants to book and wine farms to visit. But the best days in Plett are often the ones with just enough of a plan to guide you, and enough space to let the day become its own story.

A coffee that turns into a slow morning.
A beach walk before lunch.
A vineyard table you do not want to leave.
A dinner that feels like the right end to the day.

For guests staying at the Long Story, Plett offers the perfect balance of quiet moments and beautiful local experiences.

Here is our guide to eating, drinking and spending a slower, more memorable day in Plettenberg Bay.

Start With Coffee and a Gentle Morning

Start with coffee, a light breakfast and a little time to decide what kind of day you want. Some mornings call for the beach, where others are better suited for browsing, gardens, local makers and a slow wander through town.

Old Nick Village is a lovely option for this kind of morning. Set among gardens and historic buildings, it offers a mix of local design, textiles, makers, food and relaxed spaces to explore. On Wednesdays, the village comes alive with its weekly market, while the Mungo Mill and factory shop offer a closer look at locally made textiles. Long Story purchases its linen and beach towels from Mungo, as well as its crockery from Pret-a-Pot, proudly supporting local makers. Situated at Old Nick Village, Nice Neighbour brings together easy food, fresh local ingredients and a warm, open-air feel.

It is the kind of place where you can browse a little, sit a little, and ease into the day without feeling like you have already committed to a full itinerary.

Add a Beach Walk Before Lunch

Plettenberg Bay’s beaches are part of what makes the town feel so generous.

Robberg Beach is just 200 metres from the guesthouses, making it ideal for a long walk whenever the weather is clear and the light is soft. You may be lucky enough to spot dolphins offshore, and during whale season, the whales are in town too. Central Beach has a livelier feel, while Lookout Beach offers wide views and a sense of space that always feels good after a slow meal or before one.

A beach walk does not need to be to be a major outing, sometimes just thirty minutes is enough to change the whole mood of your day. Enjoy the salt air and a little movement before the next stop.

It is one of the pleasures of staying in Plett.

Settle In for a Vineyard Lunch

One of the most special things about Plettenberg Bay is that it has its own wine region, with the Plett Winelands stretching through areas such as Harkerville and The Crags.

A vineyard lunch is one of the loveliest ways to spend an afternoon.

Bramon Wine Estate is a long-time favourite and a must for lunch between the vines. The setting is relaxed, the views are generous, and the experience feels very much in keeping with the Garden Route pace. It is easy to arrive for a tasting or a light meal and end up staying longer than planned.

Newstead Lund Family Vineyards is another must for lunch, offering a beautiful setting, excellent local wines and a relaxed farm atmosphere. The Plett wine route also includes boutique estates such as Kay and Monty, worth considering if you enjoy smaller wine destinations, scenic settings and a less crowded alternative to the Cape Winelands.

This is not about ticking off as many stops as possible, choose one or maybe two to enjoy. Good afternoons are rarely improved by rushing.

Choose a Lunch That Matches the Day

Not every beautiful lunch needs to happen on a wine farm.

Plett has a strong food culture, with restaurants that range from beachy and relaxed to more atmospheric evening spots.

For seafood, The Fat Fish is one of the well-known names in town, with a focus on seafood, sushi, grilled dishes and tapas-style eating. Which works well for guests who want something polished but still relaxed, especially after a morning by the beach.

Nguni is another well-loved restaurant, often associated with local flavour, warm hospitality and a slightly more intimate dinner feel.

For something with some atmosphere, Emily Moon offers a memorable setting and a more tucked-away experience, ideal for guests who enjoy restaurants that feel as much about the place as the plate.

The best choice depends on the day you are having.

Beach day? Keep it easy.
Celebration? Book somewhere special.
Slow afternoon? Choose the place where you will not mind lingering.

Leave Room for a Little Wandering

Give yourself some time between lunch and dinner.

This is often where Plett is at its best. A gentle walk through town. A stop at a local shop. A drive with no strict destination. A return to Long Story for a swim, a rest, or a quiet hour with a book.

Not every gap in the day needs to be filled. In fact, the pauses are often what make a holiday feel like one.

Guests sometimes arrive with a list of everything they want to see, taste and do and there is nothing wrong with that. But Plett rewards a softer approach. One beautiful outing in the morning. One good lunch. One slow afternoon. One thoughtful dinner.

Enough to feel full and not so much that the day disappears.

Think About Sundowners

If the weather is kind, plan your day around golden hour.

Long Story can help pack a cooler box for sundowners before driving you to Robberg Nature Reserve, where you can settle in and watch a spectacular sunset over the landscape. It is a simple but memorable way to end the afternoon before heading back for the evening.

Plett sunsets are not always dramatic in the most obvious way. Sometimes they are soft, coastal and quiet. The sky changes slowly, air cools and day finally begins to settle.

That is often the perfect moment to stop doing and simply enjoy where you are.

End With an Easy Dinner

By the evening, the best kind of dinner is one that matches the pace of the day.

Choose somewhere close enough that getting there feels simple, or somewhere special enough to make the short drive worthwhile. Remember to book ahead when travelling in busier seasons, especially for popular restaurants or larger groups.

A good Plett dinner does not need to be formal. It just needs to feel right to you.

Fresh seafood.
A warm table.
A glass raised to a good day.
Conversation that carries on longer than expected.

That is usually enough.

Returning to Long Story

After a day out in Plettenberg Bay, returning to Long Story is part of the pleasure.

The pace softens again, shoes come off and the day becomes a memory while it is still happening. You may return to a fire already going and settle in with a glass of red wine as a nightcap. Whether you have spent the day at the beach, in the winelands, around a lunch table or exploring local favourites, Long Story gives you a warm, quiet place to come back to.

That is what makes a stay here feel different.

It is close enough to enjoy Plett properly, but calm enough to feel like your own retreat at the end of the day.

A Beautiful Day, Your Way

There is no single perfect way to spend a day in Plettenberg Bay.

For some guests, it begins with coffee and ends with seafood. For others, it is built around wine farms, beach walks, local makers and slow afternoons by the pool.

The real secret is not trying to do too much so choose wisely, move at your own pace and leave some room for the unexpected.

That is often where the best parts of Plett are found.
